The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, located in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. MD Anderson is one of the United States’ original three comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Act of 1971.

U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” survey has ranked MD Anderson the nation’s top hospital for cancer care. MD Anderson has been ranked the leading cancer hospital for 11 of the past 14 years.

MD Anderson’s mission is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the US and the world through exceptional programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention. Our mission also includes education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

In financial year (FY) 2014, more than 127,000 people sought the superior care that has made the institution so widely respected. More than 8,000 participants were enrolled in clinical trials exploring innovative treatments. MD Anderson’s cancer clinical trial program is the largest in the nation.

Translating laboratory findings into advancements in clinical care is also one of MD Anderson’s highest priorities. In FY14, more than $735 million was invested in research.

Almost 6,500 trainees, including physicians, scientists, nurses and allied health professionals, took part in educational programs at MD Anderson in FY14. The institution awards bachelor’s degrees in eight allied health disciplines and, in collaboration with the UT Health Science Center at Houston, awards M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

As part of MD Anderson’s education and outreach efforts, Global Academic Programs (GAP) facilitates and administers the MD Anderson Sister Institution Network, the largest global network of cancer centers working together on research and education. These institutions collaborate in translational, clinical and population-based research, prevention and education to lessen the world’s cancer burden.

Highlight of the month: The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Detailed genetic picture of breast cancer revealed

An international team has uncovered the most detailed evidence yet that the genetic profiles of breast cancers are highly specific to each patient. This finding represents a step towards bespoke cancer treatment based on an individual’s cancer genome.

In a study published in Nature, researchers analysed the whole genomes of 560 breast tumours, identifying 93 mutated cancer genes that were implicated in the genesis of breast cancer, including five previously unknown genes. They also found that the tumors of women carrying the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes were genetically distinct from each other and from other breast cancers.

The study’s authors note that this information could one day help direct doctors to the most effective treatment for cancer sufferers.

"In the future, we'd like to be able to profile individual cancer genomes so that we can identify the treatment most likely to be successful for a woman or man diagnosed with breast cancer. It is a step closer to personalized healthcare for cancer," said lead author Serena Nik-Zainal from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in a statement.

The multi-centre team included researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
